I’ve come to realize that there is a pretty long list of SEO terms that make people’s eyes glaze over. “Backlinks” is near the top of it.
It sounds technical, like something that belongs in a conversation between two people who spend too much time reading marketing blogs. As a busy wedding creative, it’s very easy to file it under “things I will deal with later” and move on.
But here is what a backlink actually is: it is just another website linking to yours. That is it.
When a reputable website links to you, Google sees that as a vote of confidence. The more of those votes you have, from sources that are relevant and trustworthy, the more Google starts to view your site as a legitimate, established business worth showing to people who are searching.
For wedding creatives, building backlinks does not require a PR team or a complicated strategy. It mostly requires doing what you probably already do, showing up for your clients and your community, and being intentional about capturing the SEO value along the way.
Why Backlinks Matter for Your Search Rankings
Think about what Google is trying to do every time someone searches for something. It’s trying to answer one question: who is the most trustworthy, relevant result for this person right now?
One of the ways it evaluates trustworthiness is by looking at who else on the internet has chosen to reference you. A mention on a well-known wedding blog, a link from a venue’s website, a feature in a regional publication, these tell Google that real, established sources in your industry consider you credible. Over time, those signals add up and contribute to where you rank.
It’s worth noting that backlinks are one piece of a bigger picture. Great content, a well-optimized website, and strong local signals all matter too. Backlinks remain a meaningful part of how Google evaluates authority, and for wedding creatives specifically, they are often one of the most overlooked opportunities to help rankings.
Check What Backlinks You Have Already Earned
Before you start building new backlinks, it is worth checking whether you have already earned some that you are not getting credit for. This is one of the most common missed opportunities I see.
Go search your business name right now. Look at the results that come up. Are there blog posts, portfolio features, or vendor pages that mention you without linking to your website?
If yes, you have free backlinks sitting there waiting to be claimed. A short, friendly email asking the person to add your link is completely appropriate and most people are happy to do it. More than likely, they simply did not think of it the first time.
Something like:
“Hey! I noticed you mentioned me in your post about [wedding]. Thank you so much! Would you be able to add a link to my website when you reference my name? It really helps with search visibility. My URL is [your website]. No pressure at all, just thought it was worth asking!”
That is it, and it takes about three minutes and could be one of the easiest backlinks you will ever earn.
Where to Build New Backlinks as a Wedding Creative
Once you have gone after the low-hanging fruit, here is where to focus your energy for building new links.
Venue preferred vendor lists
This is the one most wedding creatives forget about, and it is often one of the most valuable. Many venues have a page on their website listing their go-to vendors. A link from a venue’s site is good SEO real estate, because it is local, it is relevant, and it comes from a source Google already associates with weddings in that area.
If you have worked at a venue more than once and have a good relationship with the coordinator, ask to be added. You do not need to have worked there dozens of times. You just need a real relationship and work that speaks for itself.
Local and regional wedding blogs
Getting your work featured on a regional wedding blog does two things at once. It puts your work in front of couples in your area, and it earns you a backlink from a locally relevant source. Those are exactly the kinds of signals that support your local search visibility.
Submit styled shoots, pitch real weddings, make the effort to get featured, and not just for the exposure, but also for the link.
Vendors you collaborate with
When you work on a wedding or a styled shoot with other vendors, you are all creating content together. Make it a habit to link to each other when you blog about it, and to ask for the same in return. This is how a network of mutual backlinks gets built naturally over time, through real relationships and real work, not shortcuts.
If someone has already blogged about a wedding you were both part of and they did not link to you, that is another friendly email waiting to be sent.
Directories and associations worth being in
Your local chamber of commerce, regional wedding associations, and industry-specific directories are worth looking into. Some of these are free, which some require membership fees. The goal is not to sign up for dozens of them. It is to be listed on the ones that are genuinely relevant and reputable in your area or industry, because those listings send credibility signals that compound over time.
A Word on Quality Over Quantity
One thing worth saying clearly: not all backlinks are created equal. A link from a well-known regional wedding blog is worth far more than ten links from random websites that have nothing to do with your industry. Google evaluates the relevance and credibility of the source, not just how many links you have.
Focus on links that make sense. These can include sources that are genuinely connected to weddings, to your local area, or to the creative industry. Those are the ones that actually move the needle, and they are also the ones that last.
Start Here This Week
If backlinks have been on your radar without much progress, here is the simplest possible place to start.
Search your business name. Find one place that mentions you without a link, and send one email. That’s it.
From there, make a list of five vendors you have worked with in the past year and check their websites. Look for the opportunities already right in front of you before building from scratch.
Backlinks take time to accumulate, but they also compound. The ones you build today keep working for you a year from now, which makes them one of the most durable investments you can make in your SEO.
