Here is a conversation I have had more times than I can count.
A wedding photographer tells me she does not bother with local SEO. She is a destination vendor and works all over the country. The idea of tying herself to one city feels limiting, so she skips it entirely and puts her energy into Instagram instead.
I get it. The phrase “local SEO” does sound limiting when your work takes you everywhere. But here is what most wedding creatives do not realize: local SEO is not about restricting where you work. It is about giving Google something concrete to anchor you to so it can actually find you, and in return, show you to couples who are already searching.
If you skip it, you are leaving a significant amount of search visibility on the table.
What Is Local SEO, Actually?
Local SEO is the practice of optimizing your online presence so that you show up when people search for services in a specific location. Think “wedding stationer in Boston” or “luxury invitation designer near me.”
You have probably seen what those results look like. A map appears at the top of Google with three business listings underneath it. That is called the local pack. Getting into it is one of the most valuable things you can do for your visibility, because the people who end up there are almost always ready to hire someone, not just browsing.
For a long time, local SEO felt like something built for brick-and-mortar businesses such as the neighborhood coffee shop or florist, not for the stationer who takes destination commissions or the photographer who flies to European elopements. But the strategy applies to you too, maybe more than you think.
Why Local SEO Matters Even When You Work Everywhere
Couples start their search close to home
Here is something worth considering: A couple planning a destination wedding in Tuscany is probably not starting their vendor search with “wedding photographer in Florence.” They are starting it from their couch in Atlanta, searching for vendors they feel connected to, who communicate the way they do, whose aesthetic they already love.
If you have a strong local presence in Atlanta, even as a starting point, you have a much better chance of showing up in that search than a vendor with no local signals at all.
Your home base is actually an asset
Don’t think of your location as a limitation. It is an anchor. Your city and region are geographic signals that help Google understand who you are and where you operate.
A stationer based in Savannah who takes weddings across the country still benefits enormously from strong local visibility in Savannah. That is where her Google Business Profile lives, where her reviews build up, and where her referral network is rooted. Google needs that anchor to make sense of her business. Without it, she becomes harder to find, not easier.
You can create location pages without relocating
This is the part I love telling destination creatives about. If you regularly work in specific cities or regions, you can create location-specific pages on your website that speak directly to couples planning weddings in those areas.
A page called “Luxury Wedding Stationery for Napa Valley Weddings” does not mean you have an office in Napa. It means you have done beautiful work there, you understand that market, and you are telling Google (and the couples already searching) exactly that. These pages can show up in location-specific searches without you ever leaving home.
The Three Places Local SEO Actually Lives
If you are going to put time into local SEO, here is where it counts.
1. Your Google Business Profile
This is a free listing that shows up when someone searches for your business name or finds you in a local search. It is the thing that shows your service area, your photos, your reviews, and a link to your website, all before a couple ever clicks through to you.
Even if you work from home and do not have a studio, you can have one. You set a service area instead of a physical address, and Google shows you in searches for that region. Also, don’t worry! You can hide your actual home address if you work from home.
The businesses that show up in the local pack consistently are almost always the ones with complete, active, well-reviewed Google Business Profiles. If yours has been sitting untouched since you set it up, that is worth changing.
2. Your website copy
Google reads your website to understand what you do and where you do it. If your city, region, or the locations you regularly serve are not mentioned anywhere in your copy, search engines have very little to work with.
This does not mean forcing location names into every paragraph. It means writing naturally about where you work. A portfolio write-up that mentions the venue name and the city does more for your local SEO than you might expect. So does an about page that mentions where you are based. These are small details that add up.
3. Your backlinks and directory listings
When other reputable websites in your area or industry link back to yours, Google takes that as a sign that you are a legitimate, established business. This could be a listing on a local wedding blog, a mention on a venue’s preferred vendor page, or a feature in a regional publication. All of those send credibility signals that local SEO builds on.
Consistency matters here too. Your business name, location or service area, and contact details should match everywhere they appear online. Even small differences, like “Street” versus “St.”, can create quiet confusion that works against your local rankings over time.
Your Action Step
You do not have to redo your entire website to start building local visibility. Pick one of these and do it before the week is out.
- Pull up your Google Business Profile. Is it claimed? Is the service area current? Are there photos of your recent work? Fix anything that is out of date.
- Read your homepage and count how many times you mention where you work. If the answer is zero, add one natural reference to your city or region.
- Write down the three to five locations where you most often work or most want to attract clients. Then check whether any of those places appear anywhere on your website. If not, you just found your next content project.
Local SEO is one of those things that feels a little unsexy right up until the moment it starts working. And then it feels like the smartest thing you ever did.
